Connecting Communities of Color

January 13-15, 2017

at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis

Four Generative Writing Workshops that explore the narratives of the Twin Cities and beyond are offered by VONA/Voices in our second regional weekend intensive. Spend the Martin Luther King Weekend at the Loft Literary Center creating an historical and contemporary witnessing of life for people-of-color by working with renowned writers-of-color and exchanging work in a safe and dedicated writing community. These workshops are open to writers-of-color at all stages of their writing life—emerging writers, undocumented writers, silenced writers—are encouraged to apply.

Four Workshops are being offered:

Stories of Arriving with Staceyann Chin:   A gathering of family narratives: the journeys and the landings.Writers are encouraged to write about their journeys, both internal and geographic, from finding a place to live to finding a sense of self.

Encounters of Race and Culture with Chris Abani--Stories of the neighborhood: the complications of identity and belonging and not belonging. The writers reveal the complications of the neighborhood, the conflicts and struggles of placing self and family in unfamiliar territory. These are stories of place and of placement, alliance and aloneness, and what it takes to make your home with neighbors of different cultures.

Voices of the Silenced First Nations Peoples with Natalie Diaz:– The Native Writers Workshop with Natalie Diaz: Native Writers generate works in poetry or prose through writing exercises and prompts. They exchange their work, share ideas about craft, and explore society, culture and identity through discussion.

Poetry as Documentary with Elmaz Abinader-- Using poetry as storytelling, witness, and history. Using their language as their lens, writers testify with poetry as a way of providing a perspective on news, history, experience and surviving. Writing on the page and performing on the stage are activities of this workshop.
