Applying to VONA Facts
The Workshops are one-week long,
beginning Sunday night and continuing to Saturday morning.
The dates for 2018 are:
Session I June 17-June 23
Session II June 24-June 30

The location is Realm Charter School in Berkeley, CA.
The closest airports are Oakland, CA and San Francisco, CA
Beginning this year, VONA is non-residential however, there are a limited number rooms available on the UC Berkeley campus with a meal plan starting at $800. Complete details available upon acceptance to a workshop.
Who may apply: All writers-of-color may apply to VONA workshop. Experience, publications and degrees do not influence the application as much as an exhibited desire to develop as a writer. In the application process, the writer is asked to respond to questions about personal and creative expectations and their passion for writing.
Writers may attend 3 workshops maximum in the same genre or topic. Alums may attend 2 additional workshops in different genres or topics. No more than 3 years may be consecutive. If you are an Alum of VONA/Voices who has had the maximum number of workshops (5), thank you for making your space available to new members of our community.

What You Need to Apply
Our applications are through Submittable and available on December 10, 2017; application deadline is February 19, 2018
Although you can only attend one workshop, we encourage making a first and second choice on your application. Getting the VONA experience is achievable through all our workshops.
The application form needs to be completed, and the writing sample attached to the application form as follows.
Writing Sample Length
Poetry Submissions: 5 – 10 poems (not to exceed 20 pages)
Prose Submissions: sample of one piece or combination of pieces to equal no more than 4000 words in genre
Residency: up to 4000 words in a non-fiction novel or short fiction or 5-10 poems (not to exceed 20 pages)
Your application is not considered complete until you upload the manuscript and pay the $25 application fee.
Recommendations are not required.
-Paginate your pages.
-Please save your document in .pdf or .doc.
-Include your name and the name of genre and faculty of your first choice of workshop. For example: jonesfictiongalang.doc
-In prose submission, please use double space, 12 point font and standard margins.
Tuition and Fees
VONA tuition for the week is $1100.
Application fee is $25.00
Applications are available on December 10, 2018
Application Deadline is February 19, 2018
A $200 deposit is due upon acceptance.

Deposit is due March 26.
If you are on a waiting list, you will be notified of your status by April 1.
We will provide some resources on local lodging.
For writers seeking financial aid, VONA offers limited partial tuition scholarships. The opportunity to attach a letter stating your financial need is part of the application. Many writers have had their own fundraisers (parties, gofundme, readings, etc) to finance their tuition and housing. Good Luck!
